Varennes sur Allier- Moulins  (25 Km)
val d'allier.jpg The river crosses here the natural reserve of the Val d'Allier. The bed of the river curves between bush and thickets in the middle of an intact nature. Navigation is obvious there being given its still limited width and the weak unevenness.

Moulins - Villeneuve sur Allier (18 km) - Le Veurdre (32 km)
Navigation is peaceful on the beginning of the course although the passage of the bridge of Moulins conceals some traps! …  The Allier river finds its way between the islands and the "levées", kinds of earth embankments, ultimate protection against the winter risings. The stops are easy, allowing baths and rest. During the summer season, the low water level lets appear great sand beaches bordered by willows offering of the shade for the hottest hours of the day.

Le Veudre - Apremont (25 km) - le bec d'Allier (30 km)
At this place, Allier river is divided into several arms which intermingle unceasingly letting differently appear a multitude of inaccessible islands than in the canoe. The river shows then fully its wild beauty and its preserved environment.
Be wary of the apparent tranquility of the landscape: this course is more sportive than it does appear... You will pass by the water reserve of the Lorrains.  Its passage, possible on the left according to the water level, might be dificult. This is by the way, a well-known spot for rodeo-kayak afficionados !

Then, the "pont-canal": its crossing is possible all the year, untill using the special waterway. Don't panic these paths are easily recognizable and bearing always possible.

Le Bec d'Allier -  Fourchambault (10 km) - la Charité sur Loire (25km)
Here the Loire receives its principal affluent Allier, and the dimension of the river changes. This part does not present particular difficulties put aside the passage of the broken dam at Fourchambault. It is amusing and without danger.
The "chevrettes", remains of the commercial navigation of last century, are small stone made submarines dams.They were formerly used to channel the river during the period of low water level. They are now reserved for canoeists and fishermen, they also shelter a characteristic ecosystem.
The last section, starting from La Charité sur Loire, known classified city by the UNESCO world heritage, also crosses a natural reserve.
